GIMP for Astro images

  • File/Open image
  • Image/Precision/16bit
  • Image/Scale Image (scale image width down to around 3500 pixels and hit enter)
  • Window/Dockable Dialogs/Histogram (opens histogram on the right)
  • View/Show layer boundary/off
  • View/Zoom/Fit Image in window
  • Color/Curves/make an aggressive ASTRO CURVE
  • Color/Levels/move MID arrow to left then left arrow (BLACK) to right (repeat this step as necessary to being out pic)
  • Color/Levels/RGB and line up each color on histogram to balance colors
  • Color/Curves/Value (move bottom dot to right to darken background and make a small tight "S" curve)
  • Tools/ Rotate 90* or 180* if necessary
  • CROP the edges
  • Filters/Enhance/NOISE REDUCTION (2x if necessary)
  • Filters/Enhance/SHARPEN
  • Color/Hue Chroma/LIGHTNESS (Lightness only to -3)
  • Color/Color Balance/Shadows, Midtone, Highlights with each color (+3)
  • Color/Temperature (slide top to left a bit & slide bottom to right a bit)
  • Filters/Enhance/NOISE REDUCTION (if needed again)
  • Color/Curves/make an "S" CURVE to bring out more color (Value & RGB separate) move bottom dot to right for more black then top "S" aggressive to the left for color
  • Color/Curves/make a REVERSE "S" CURVE for smoother Reds in Nebulas (optional)
  • Save as a GIMP .xcf file
  • EXPORT as .jpeg file
