청춘 (Youth)

Youth is not a time of life－it is a state of mind.
It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees.
It is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination,
a vigor of the emotions.
It is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of
the appetite for adventure over the love of ease.

'청춘'이란 인생 가운데 어떤 기간이 아니라 마음가짐.
발그레한 빰, 붉은 입술, 생생한 관절을 뜻하지 않고,
강건한 의지, 풍부한 상상력, 불타오르는 정열,
삶의 깊은 샘에서 솟아오르는 청량함이다.
청춘이란 안이한 마음을
물리칠 수 있는 용기를 뜻한다.

This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of the 20.
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.
We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give enthusiasm wrinkle the soul.
Worry, Doubt, self-distrust, fear and despair－these are the long,
long years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust.

때로는 스무살 청년이 아닌 예순살 노인에게 청춘이 있다
사람은 나이를 먹어가는 것 만으로 늙지 않는다
이상을 잃을 때 비로소 늙는다
세월은 피부에 주름살을 만들지만,
열정을 잃을 때는 영혼이 주름진다.
걱정, 의심, 자기불신, 공포, 절망과 같은 것들로
사람은 일찌감치도 기운을 잃고 그의 영혼은 먼지가 된다

Whether 60 or 16, there is every human being's heart the lure of wonder,
the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and
the joy of the game of living.
In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;
so long as it receive massages of beauty, hope, cheer,
courage and power from men from the infinite, so long are you young.

일흔 이든 열 여섯이든 인간은 경이에 이끌리며,
아이들 처럼 미래에 대한 호기심과
삶을 살아기는 기쁨을 가진다.
당신과 나의 마음 속에는 무선통신국이 있어,
사람들과 무한자로부터 아름다움, 희망, 기쁨, 용기, 힘의
신호를 받는 한 그대는 여전히 젊다

When aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of
cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20.
But as long as your aerials are up, to each waves of optimism,
there is hope you may die young at 80.

영감이 끊어지고, 정신에 차가운 냉소가 눈 같이 쌓이고
얼음같은 부정적인 생각 속에 정신이 갇힐 때, 스무살에도 인간은 늙는다
머리를 높이 치켜들고 희망의 물결을 붙잡는 한
여든 살이라도 인간은 청춘 가운데 죽는다.
