1. 오바마 취임식

미국에 온 지가 10여 년이 되다보니 두 명의 대통령이 퇴임하고 두 명의 대통령이 취임하는 것을 다 보게된다. 이번 미국 대통령 취임식은 나 같이 선거권도 없는 "(영구) 에일리언"으로서도 상당히 흥분되는 행사였다. 관전의 묘미는 사람마다 다를 듯 하다. 내 경우는 취임식 축하음악이 주요 관심사였다.

점심시간에 인터넷으로 시청한 오바마의 취임식에는 두 종류의 음악이 등장한다. 첫번째로 등장한 축가는 소울의 여왕 아레사 프랭클린이 부른 {My Country, 'Tis of Thee}란 노래다. 가사의 1절만 옮긴다.

My country, 'tis of thee,

Sweet land of liberty,

Of thee I sing;

Land where my fathers died,

Land of the pilgrims' pride,

From every mountainside

Let freedom ring

아레사 프랭클린이 노래를 부르며 뜨거운 감격의 눈물을 흘리지 않을까 상상했지만, 내 상상이 지나치게 상투적인 것으로 곧 밝혀졌다. 눈물은 대신 비욘세가 흘렸다.

내 관심은 프랭클린의 노래가 아니라 축하연주였다. 이 축하곡에 관련된 연주자들의 인종에 꽤 신경쓴 듯 보인다. 존 윌리엄스가 편곡한 {Air and Simple Gifts}을 유대인 이착 펄만, 시카고 출신의 흑인 앤서니 맥길, 중국인 요요 마, 그리고 베네주엘라 출신의 가브리엘라 몬테로가 각각 바이올린, 클라리넷, 첼로, 피아노를 담당한다. 한가닥씩 하는 연주자들이지만 내 관심은 (늘 그렇듯) 연주자가 아니라 연주곡이다.

존 윌리엄스는 이 곡을 20세기 초 미국의 (유대인 작곡가) 아론 코플랜드의 발레곡 {Appalacian Spring}에 편곡/삽입된 미국 쉐이커들의 19세기 춤곡/찬송가 {Simple Gifts}을 다시 편곡했다. 후반부가 바로크 풍인 코플랜드의 버전은 이렇다.

2. {Simple Gifts}

이 귀에 익은 멜로디의 원곡은 18세기 미국 쉐이커(Shakers)들로 거슬러 올라간다. 영국에서 시작해 (그리스도의 "여성형" 재림으로 여겨진) 여성지도자인 앤 리를 따라 미국으로 이주한 쉐이커들은 본래 퀘이커들과 역사적으로 대체로 같은 뿌리를 가진 종교그룹이지만, 대체로 감정을 절제하는 퀘이커들과 달리 그들의 종교생활에서 감성적인 부분을 더 강화시켰다. '쉐이커'라는 말 자체가 그들이 기도나 찬송을 부르거나 춤을 출 때, 황홀경 속에서 온 몸을 격렬히 떠는 것을 폄하해서 "떠는 퀘이커 Shaking Quakers"란 뜻으로 붙여진 폄칭이다. (참고로 '퀘이커' 역시 폄칭이다.) 특별히 이들은 모임 중에서 아래와 같은 집단군무를 즐겨했다. 

이들이 지도자 앤 리를 그리스도의 여성형 재림 혹은 화신으로 여긴 점도 흥미롭지만, 이들의 절제된 집단군무를 정형화 하려 거기에 신학적 의미를 부여한 점도 당시로서는 특이하다.

(영국이나 뉴잉글랜드의 퓨리턴들이 봤으면 입에 거품을 물었을 만한) 남녀가 뒤섞인 저 집단군무에서 떠올려지는 다소 부정적인 인상과는 달리, 쉐이커들은 극도의 금욕생활을 지향했고 따라서 공동체의 일원들은 모두 독신이었다. 그래서 이들은 출생을 통해서가 아니라 개종과 고아의 입양을 통해서만 공동체의 일원을 받았다. (그 결과 오늘날 미국 쉐이커들은 거의 역사에서 사라지기 직전이다.) 내가 어렸을 때 코플랜드 버전의 이 곡은 한국 토종 위스키 TV 광고음악으로 사용되었는데, 쉐이커들이 알았으면 입에 거품을 물었을 지도.

그들의 춤곡/찬송가인 {Simple Gifts}는 전형적인 영국민요풍의 멜로디와 아래의 가사를 가지고 있다.

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,
'Tis the gift to come down where you ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gain'd,
To bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd,
To turn, turn will be our delight,
Till by turning, turning we come round right.

3. {Lord of the Dance}와 {Tomorrow shall be my dancing day}

이 소박하고 아름다운 단선율 멜로디에 다른 가사를 붙이려는 시도 중에서, 시인 시드니 카터가 1960년대에 {Lord of the Dance}란 제목으로 발표한 가사가 가장 성공적이었다.

I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,
And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth:
At Bethlehem I had my birth.

Dance, then, wherever you may be,
I am the Lord of the dance, said he,
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I'll lead you all in the dance, said he.

I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee,
But they would not dance and they wouldn't follow me;
I danced for the fishermen, for James and John;
They came with me and the dance went on:

Dance, then, wherever you may be,
I am the Lord of the dance, said he,
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be,

이 곡을 처음 들었던 것은 중학생 시절이었는데, 다시 오랜 세월이 흘러 이 노래를 다시 듣게 된 것은 2004년 무렵 블루밍턴의 퀘이커 예배에 참석해서였다.



이 가사의 대략적인 모티프는 예수를 화자로 하는 17세기 영국의 크리스마스 캐럴까지 소급된다. {Tomorrow shall be my dancing day}라는 제목의 캐럴로, 이 캐롤의 화자인 예수는 자신의 탄생과 수난과 부활과 승천에 이르는 과정을 사람들에게 자신의 사랑을 입증하기 위한 "춤"이었다고 선언한다.

Tomorrow shall be my dancing day;
I would my true love did so chance
To see the legend of my play,
To call my true love to my dance;

Sing, oh! my love, oh! my love, my love, my love,
This have I done for my true love.

Then was I born of a virgin pure,
Of her I took fleshly substance

유사한 내용을 담은 이 두 노래 중에서 하나를 고르라면, 나는 {Tomorrow Shall be My Dancing Day}를 고르겠다. {Lord of the Dance}의 가사가 신나게 "춤추는 것" 그 자체에 집중하는 반면, {Tomorrow Shall be My Dancing Day}는 기본적으로 "사랑"에 대한 노래이기 때문.




4. {River Dance}

만약 저 {춤의 왕}에서 종교적 가사를 떼어낸 후 본연의 춤곡으로서의 멜로디만 살린다면, 아마도 사바세계에서의 진정한 '춤의 왕'은... 일렬로 도열해서 늘씬한 다리를 드러내고 신들린 듯 탭댄스를 추어대는 켈트의 후손들 앞에서 느끼한 포스를 강렬히 뿜어대는 리버댄스의 주역 Michael Flately 가 아닐까 싶다. 그러고보니....마이클 프래틀리도 시카고 출신.



가사가 {Simple Gifts}이든 {Lord of the Dance}이든, 그리고 후자의 가사가 반-유대인 정서를 가졌든 말든, 이 소박하고도 아름다운 멜로디는 때로는 쉐이커들의 찬송가와 집단군무의 춤곡으로, 때로는 신들린 아이리쉬 탭댄스 음악으로, 그리고 오늘은 유대인, 중국인, 흑인, 히스패닉에 의해 대통령 취임식 축하음악으로 연주된다.

이 멜로디와 관계된 사람들의 공통점이 있다면, 그들이 모두 '마이너리티'였다는 점이다.
