70년대 포크음악과 저항운동의 아이콘이었던 {피터, 폴 & 매리} 혹은 PPM 의 홍일점 Mary Travers가 2009년 9월 백혈병으로 세상을 떠났다.

아래 노래는 암투병 중 발표했던 매리 트래버스의 싱글 {But a moment 그저 한 순간}.

Time is a ribbon without an end

Love is the lesson we keep learning

Death but a moment we must spend

Last week as I made our lunch
We talked of yesterdays

That happens lots these days

그해 11월 뉴욕 리버사이드 교회에서 있었던 기념식에서 매리를 유쾌하게 떠나보내며, 피터와 폴은 사람들과 함께 {This is your land}를 노래 부른다.

{뉴욕타임즈}가 전하는 우피 골드버그의 추도사는 감동적이다. 

"They said: 'This belongs to you. This land is your land. If you don’t like what’s going on, get up and say something. Get up and sing. Get up and march.'"

그들은 말했습니다, "이건 당신 거야. 이 땅은 당신 땅이야. 세상 돌아가는게 마음에 들지 않으면, 일어나 뭐라도 외쳐! 일어나 노래해! 일어나 행진하라고!  -- 우피 골드버그 / 번역: 최광민 

그러나 그 누구의 추도사보다 Theodore Bikel 의 평가가 적절하다고 나는 여긴다.

''There were other people besides Mary who taught us that dissent was right and dissent was just, But only Mary taught us that dissent was also beautiful.''

매리 말고도, 저항은 옳은 것이며 또 정의로운 것이라 우리에게 말해준 사람들은 있었습니다. 하지만 오직 매리 만이 저항은 또한 아름답다는걸 가르쳐 줬습니다.  -- Theodore Bikel / 번역: 최광민

Yes, My Love, Yes.

그래, 그러자 자기야.

"저항"이나 "반전"이란 단어는 단 한마디도 등장하지 않지만, 나는 이보다 더 아름다운 반전/저항가요를 들어본 적이 없다.

그러니 저항과 혁명을 꿈꾸는 이들이여, 니체의 충고를 늘 기억하라.
